Congratulations on your new appliance! The following tips will help you adjust to wearing your expander and answer some common questions. If you have any other concerns, do not hesitate to give us a call.
Extra Saliva & Swallowing: You may notice extra saliva and awkward swallowing for the first day or two—this is completely normal and will improve over time.
Speech Practice: To get used to speaking with the expander, read aloud for about 20 minutes this evening. It helps!
Wax for Comfort: If the back braces feel rough or irritate your cheeks, use the wax provided. Don’t worry—your cheeks will adapt soon. Need more wax? Just call—we’ve got plenty! 😊
Dealing with Discomfort: You may feel slight pressure or discomfort in the first few days of turning. If needed, with a parent’s supervision, we recommend taking Advil about 15 minutes before turning.
Turning Schedule: Follow Dr. Landin's instructions for turning your expander. If you miss a turn, just continue with the next scheduled turn—don’t do two at once.
Food to Avoid: Steer clear of hard or sticky foods and HOT pizza! The cheese can burn the roof of your mouth. You can read a list of foods to avoid via the button below.
Brushing Your Teeth: Brush carefully around the appliance and the bands on your back teeth to prevent irritation and soreness of your gums.
Gaps Between Front Teeth: As the expander works, you may notice a gap forming between your front teeth. This is a good sign that the expander is doing its job! The gap will gradually close over the coming weeks.
Your expander is an important part of your treatment, and following these guidelines will help ensure everything goes smoothly. We’re here to support you every step of the way—feel free to reach out anytime!
