Braces-Friendly Eating: Foods to Avoid for a Smoother Treatment



The list below provides examples of foods to avoid during your orthodontic treatment, but it’s not exhaustive! If you're unsure whether something might damage, loosen, or bend any part of your braces or appliances, it’s best to avoid it.


Hard Foods

  • Nuts

  • Ice cubes

  • Corn on the cob

  • Popcorn

  • Hard candy (e.g., Jolly Ranchers)

  • Pizza crust

  • Pretzels

  • Hard chips

  • Crunchy cereals

  • Bagels (okay in small bites)

  • Crusty bread

  • All raw fruits and vegetables (okay to cut into small pieces, julienned, or thinly sliced)


Sticky Foods

  • Taffy, caramel

  • Gummy bears, Swedish Fish, and similar candies

  • Starburst and Skittles

  • Snickers

  • Fruit roll-ups

  • Licorice

  • Raisins

  • No gum!
