Different Types of Retainers: Find the Best Fit for Your Orthodontic Needs

The retention phase of orthodontic treatment is arguably the most critical part of the entire process. Why? Because, just like our bodies change over time, our teeth have a natural tendency to move. Whether you’ve achieved your smile with braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, wearing a retainer every night for life is essential to preserve the beautiful results you’ve worked so hard to achieve. And yes, they need to be worn every night for life.

There are several retainer options available, each with its own benefits and considerations. Let’s break them down so you can make the best choice for your long-term smile care.

Two Main Types of Removable Retainers

1. Essix Retainers

Essix retainers, our top choice for retention, are a popular, clear option similar to Invisalign® aligners. These retainers are:

  • Aesthetic: Virtually invisible, so no one knows you’re wearing them.

  • Comfortable: Their smooth plastic design makes them easy to wear nightly.

  • Protective: If you grind your teeth, Essix retainers can double as a night guard, shielding your teeth from wear and tear.

With proper care, Essix retainers can last for years—even a decade or more! To maximize their lifespan, always remove them gently from the back of your mouth rather than pulling from the front or corners, where the material is thinner and more prone to tearing. And remember, retainers can be expensive to replace, so a little extra care goes a long way!

2. Hawley Retainers

The “old-school” Hawley retainers are made of acrylic and metal. While not as discreet as Essix retainers, they have their own advantages:

  • Durability: Their sturdier construction makes them ideal for patients who are a bit rougher on their retainers.

  • Customizable Colors: While the default color is a gum-matching pink, you can opt for a fun color or design that reflects your personality.

A common issue with Hawley retainers is the metal bar in the front, which can loosen over time. This requires periodic tightening by your orthodontist. Some patients actually prefer Hawley retainers because their color makes it easier to spot if accidentally dropped on the floor—a bonus for anyone prone to misplacing their retainer!

What About Fixed Retainers?

A fixed (or permanent) retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your upper or lower front teeth. While it provides constant retention for those teeth, it doesn’t eliminate the need for a removable retainer. Here’s why:

  • Limited Coverage: Fixed retainers only support your front teeth, leaving the back teeth without protection.

  • Maintenance: Fixed retainers can break without your knowledge, leading to unwanted movement.

For these reasons, I still recommend wearing a removable retainer—Essix or Hawley—nightly.  This offers an added layer of protection; if your fixed retainer breaks and you can’t see your orthodontist immediately, you can wear the removable retainer full-time to prevent your teeth from shifting until the fixed retainer is repaired.  There are a few cons to this option that we will discuss in a future blog post, so check back in the near future!

Retainers Are the Key to Long-Term Success

Retainers are absolutely essential to maintaining the beautiful smile you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Always use the one provided by your orthodontist, and if your retainer becomes cracked or lost, replace it as soon as possible—teeth can move quickly!

Your smile is an investment worth protecting, so make your retainer a permanent part of your nightly routine!
